Origins & Evolution
Since 1951, the Bridgewater Country Fair has been a cornerstone of community life—born out of the Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department’s desire to fund itself beyond small-scale events like dances and dinners. What began as a modest carnival has blossomed into a major annual celebration, deeply rooted in the town’s agricultural heritage.
Tradition Meets Community
Over the decades, the fair grew not just in size but in spirit. Volunteer firemen and EMS crews transitioned from fundraising dinners to preparing iconic roast beef sandwiches and funnel cakes, creating a beloved culinary tradition. Meanwhile, contests in livestock, produce, and crafts reflected the town’s farming heritage and fostered local pride.
Growth & Highlights
- 1960s–2010s: The fair added tractor pulls, pig races, simulators, mechanical bulls, and full carnival rides—including the Ferris wheel—evolving into a full-fledged festival.
- Community spirit soared: With over 1,000 volunteers in a town of fewer than 2,000, the fair became a demonstration of collective effort and pride.
- Attendance milestones: In 2016, the 65th fair drew more than 30,000 visitors—a record for the event.
Cultural Impact
- Fundraising Muscle: The fair supports about 90% of the BVFD budget, making it vital to sustaining CT’s last self-supported fire department.
- Intergenerational Bonding: From Cub Scouts to longtime fire department volunteers, the fair built traditions passed through families.
- A Local Institution: Repeatedly called the “culminating event of the summer,” the fair anchors Bridgewater’s annual rhythm.
Today & Beyond
Marking its 72nd year in 2025, the fair remains a vibrant blend of history, nostalgia, and new attractions—from drone demos to craft beer tastings—while staying true to its original mission: bringing the community together to support their own.
